I’ve fallen happily into the world of watercolour and started a new series featuring Fred (inspired by my dog), along with a frog and a rat.
These illustrations are early experiments for a possible book. Right now, I’m discovering who these characters are and how they want to look — their expressions, their quirks, their energy. It’s a bit like getting to know new friends.
Interestingly, sharing the images on social media helps me see them more clearly. Once they’re out in the world, it’s like viewing them through fresh eyes — I can instantly tell what needs a little more energy or charm.
Most of my illustration ideas come from everyday life. Recently, I started dancing for 20 minutes a day — no audience, no choreography, just movement for the sheer joy of it. It lifts my mood instantly and reminds me not to take life too seriously.
And that’s when it hit me… what about a dancing frog?
Frogs already look as though they’re mid-performance when they leap around on those gloriously gangly legs. They’re basically tiny, green, professional interpretive dancers. Add a splash of watercolour and a hint of mischief, and suddenly you’ve got a character who can’t help but spread a little happiness.
